Over a dozen students gathered in the Unity House Cultural Education Center Monday night to attend the kickoff of the Unity House C5 Speaker Series with guest speaker Mike Roth, athletic director for the University.

C5, which stands for "courageous conversations create caring communities," is a monthly speaker series put on by Unity House, according to Bob Bartlett, director of Unity House. The series is being facilitated by K. Gurley, a graduate student.

"We want hard, courageous conversation that many of us find difficult to talk about," Gurley said. "We want students to be real."

Gurley said the C5 series was an opportunity to bring about change between students and the administration.

"[It's] the drive to be able to make a positive change, to open up other people's eyes," Gurley said. "There's a need here; a concern for academic and cultural integrity."

Senior and Black Student Union president Marcell Gonzales thinks the administration has been making improvements with diversity on campus.

"Last year, there was nothing going on," Gonzales said. "But they worked on it over the summer and they just started having these kinds of conversations."

But to Gurley, it's not enough. He said that Unity House is underfunded and understaffed.

"It's more than they had last year, but it's not acceptable," he said.

This is why the C5 speaker series is vital for students. It gives them a chance to voice their opinions to staff in hopes for change.

Senior Uhura Wright appreciated Roth coming in to speak and to listen to students Monday night.

"He came here to listen and to hear us out," Wright said. "I'm not sure what level he's going to act, but he wants to change."

The topic discussed Monday night was the role and the life of student-athletes. Students who attended had the chance to speak their mind to Roth about how culture and diversity should play a vital role in the lives of all students, especially in the lives of student-athletes.
